The world's strangest time zone offsets
Most people assume every time zone on Earth sits a whole number of hours from UTC — plug a place into a world clock and you expect the minutes to match everywhere, just the hour digit changing. That assumption holds for the vast majority of the globe, but a surprising number of countries deliberately break it, running their clocks 30 or 45 minutes off the nearest hour. None of this is an error or a quirk of the software you're using — it's the direct result of political choices made over the past century and a half, each one traceable to a country wanting its own meridian, its own identity, or a bit of daylight distance from a neighbour.
The 30-minute club
The most common "odd" offset is a half-hour one, and it's more widespread than most people realise. India and Sri Lanka both run on UTC+5:30, a single time zone that spans the entire Indian subcontinent regardless of how far its eastern and western edges actually are from Greenwich. Nearby, Iran sits at UTC+3:30 and Afghanistan at UTC+4:30 — two neighbouring countries whose offsets differ from each other, and from everyone else, by exactly half an hour. Further east, Myanmar keeps UTC+6:30, distinct from both India to its west and Thailand to its east.
Australia adds two more members to the club: South Australia and the Northern Territory both run on UTC+9:30, splitting the difference between Western Australia's UTC+8 and the eastern states' UTC+10. And the half-hour offset isn't only an Old World habit — French Polynesia's Marquesas Islands sit at UTC−9:30, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland keeps UTC−3:30, half an hour removed from the rest of Atlantic Canada. Each of these exists for a similar reason: a government decided that splitting the difference between two round-hour zones, or fixing time to its own local meridian, mattered more than tidiness on a map.
The 45-minute club
Rarer still is the 45-minute offset, and only a handful of places use one. Nepal is the best known: its standard time, UTC+5:45, is set to the meridian running through Kathmandu and lands a full quarter-hour ahead of India's UTC+5:30. That gap is widely understood as deliberate — a small but symbolically important way of keeping Nepal's clock distinct from its much larger neighbour's, rather than simply adopting Indian Standard Time.
On the opposite side of the world, New Zealand's Chatham Islands keep UTC+12:45, 45 minutes ahead of mainland New Zealand's UTC+12 — a small, remote island group choosing to sit slightly ahead of the country it belongs to rather than sharing its exact clock. And in the vast, thinly populated stretch of Australia between South Australia and Western Australia, the tiny roadhouse settlement of Eucla unofficially keeps UTC+8:45. It isn't a legally gazetted zone — Western Australia's official time is UTC+8 — but the community there has long kept clocks at the midpoint between Perth's time and the Central Australian time to its east, since either neighbouring zone would otherwise be badly out of step with the sun at that longitude. The roadhouse, the motel and the handful of other buildings that make up Eucla simply agreed among themselves on an offset that no state law requires and no official map shows.
The extremes: +14 and −12
At the far end of the range sits Kiribati's Line Islands, including Kiritimati (Christmas Island), on UTC+14 — the furthest-forward clock time anywhere on the planet. Kiribati adopted that offset specifically so its entire territory, which stretches across what would otherwise be the date line, could share a single calendar date. At the opposite extreme, UTC−12 exists on the clock but nowhere with permanent residents — it applies only to Baker Island and Howland Island, two uninhabited specks of U.S. territory in the Pacific. Between the earliest clocks in Kiribati and the emptiest ones at UTC−12, the full 26-hour spread of offsets in daily use is far wider than the 24 you'd expect from one clock per hour of longitude.
An oddity in how the clocks change, too
Even daylight saving time, which almost everywhere shifts clocks by a full hour, has its own half-measure. Lord Howe Island, a small Australian territory in the Tasman Sea, changes its clocks by only 30 minutes each year, moving between UTC+10:30 in winter and UTC+11 in summer rather than the full hour its mainland neighbours use.
What ties every one of these examples together is that none of it follows the neat 15-degrees-per-hour grid the world nominally agreed on in the 1880s. A country picks the meridian of its capital, a small island wants a whit of separation from the nation it's still politically part of, or a government finds it easier to hold an entire, geographically vast country to one time regardless of longitude — the reasons are political and historical, not astronomical.
