Reading the 24-hour clock

The 24-hour clock counts the hours of the day from 0 to 23, so there is exactly one time for every moment and no AM/PM to get wrong. The morning hours match the 12-hour clock with a leading zero — 0700 is 7 AM — while afternoon and evening add 12 to the hour, so 1500 is 3 PM. The only two values worth memorising are the boundaries: 0000 is midnight and 1200 is noon. It is the international standard (ISO 8601 uses it) and the norm in aviation, healthcare and the armed forces because a misread AM/PM can be dangerous. For the seconds-accurate current time, see UTC time now.

Frequently asked questions

What is military time?
Military time is a 24-hour clock. Instead of restarting at 1 after noon, the hours keep counting: 1 PM is 1300 ("thirteen hundred"), 6 PM is 1800, and midnight is 0000. It removes the AM/PM ambiguity, which is why the military, aviation, medicine and most of the world outside the US use it.
How do I convert PM times to military time?
For any afternoon or evening time, add 12 to the hour: 1 PM + 12 = 1300, 5 PM + 12 = 1700, 11 PM + 12 = 2300. Noon stays 1200. Morning hours keep their number with a leading zero — 9 AM is 0900.
What is midnight in military time — 0000 or 2400?
Midnight at the start of a day is written 0000 ("zero hundred"). Some schedules use 2400 to mark the end of a day, but 0000 is the standard start-of-day value and what this converter uses.
How is military time spoken aloud?
Read the four digits in pairs: 0900 is "zero nine hundred", 1300 is "thirteen hundred", and 1345 is "thirteen forty-five". On-the-hour times end in "hundred"; times with minutes are read as the two numbers.
